Last minute gift idea that actually seemed really simple but after making four crazy messed up ones, I scraped the insulated batting idea and went to wool felt instead. It made the entire process come together in seconds.

This one I made with an embroidered initial ribbon I bought here awhile back.

And this one I made with a section of the Tiny Tots + Dots Twill Tape.

I opted for velcro so it fit onto several different size cups. Our two favorite cups, even though I am a tea drinker rather than coffee, is this cup and this cup. Both are ceramic versions of paper cups so they’re hot. Real hot.

I uploaded a pattern here. Click on “download the large size” and print it out. The sleeve pattern didn’t fit on one page so I had to break up the sleeve into two pieces on the pattern. So just cut out the paper pattern pieces and tape them together then cut out two pieces from wool felt. The pattern indicates where to sew on your velcro pieces. Place on top of each other and topstitch 1/8″ from edge and you’re done!

Wonderful, can’t wait to get home and try this!

Cool idea– I’ll bet the felt does a great job! I’ve seen kits to make these things with baubles and crazy impractical decorations for like $8 and had tossed around the idea of making a simpler version, but I was thinking I’d need to make something quilted. This is a much simpler solution, and it would make a nice gift idea for coffee addicts in my life!

Thanks for sharing this with your loyal readers! What a great idea for protecting the fingers of hot bevvy drinkers. Unfortunately I’m having trouble getting the pattern. When I click on your link, it takes me to a login page for posting images on Yahoo. Hmmm…

In any case, have a very happy holiday season!

Big fan of the wool felt. If you have extra time they embroider up quickly. Great craft to take with you in the car (if you aren’t driving)! I like to add a ring to attach it to my key ring. Great to have with you especially now that Starbucks offers a discount if you bring your own.

crazy! i just made a few of these for my pint glasses that i drink tea out of. i knit and fulled a few in the first go round but opted for the wool felt as well, thinking that the possibility of actually taking them with me was greater. (for people without a pattern, just grab a java jacket from your coffeshop and copy that one!)

Thank you for this! I usually forget my coffee on the desk until it’s cold, but I’ll make a couple of these for ym grandparents :)

I have knitted a few java jackets but not tired to sew one yet as I’m only learning to sew but making a java jacket is on my to do list…its a lovely little project that I may save for a rainy day or when I have some velcro… I do have some purple flet though as my husband was being helful and washed my purple wool winter coat… *sigh*

I was just thinking how I needed to invent this to reduce waste and help the environment. Thank you for doing it first! Love it!

Thanks for this! I’ve seen mug cozies in the past and thought it would be fun to make, but I love the pattern and the suggestion to use wool felt.

Aha! The way you put the velcro on is genius. :) I just posted an embroidered felt version to my blog w/out your pattern, but as it was my first felt project, I wasn’t quite happy with the fit because it wasn’t expandable/adjustable when I was done. Thanks for sharing the pattern.
